Who are we?
Fire Mountain Farm & Apiary is
a small-scale, highly-diversified, pesticide-and-herbicide-free* farm perched
on scenic Pitkin Mesa, just outside Paonia Colorado. Along the edge of the
North Fork Valley, heralded as one of the premier organic growing areas in the
United States, we overlook the North Fork of the Gunnison River, and the
surrounding West Elk and Ragged Mountains. We strive to produce the finest
Colorado-and-organically-grown food available. We raise limited quantities of
pesticide-and-herbicide-free fruits, vegetables, nuts, poultry, eggs, goats and
goat-milk products, cut-flowers, and [better-than-organic] treatment-free
honey.
* We are Certified Naturally Grown
(see http://www.naturallygrown.org
).
What is a CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture,
or CSA,
is a way for farms to have a direct relationship
with their consumers, and likewise consumers with their farmers. The consumers
purchase a ÒshareÓ--a part, a percentage--of what is produced, and insure that
they are receiving the highest quality food possible by knowing and having an
on-going relationship with the folks raising their food. They also share the
risks and limitations of farming by getting more or less of everything raised,
depending on the fluctuations of weather, pests, and other issues inherent to
farming. Purchasing a share for the season helps support Colorado-grown and
sustainable agriculture.
HereÕs how it
works:
You purchase up-front a food share
of your choice, and the promise that a selection of seasonally-available foods
will be delivered to your area twice a month between June 30th and
October 30th. You pay at the beginning of the season, thereby
ameliorating the sometimes crippling start-up costs to the farmer each Spring.
July through October youÕll receive
a box containing a variety of chemical-free produce every other week. The produce each week includes a changing
variety of what currently is in season. For example, early season boxes will
contain cold-weather produce such as salad greens, swiss chard, kale, spinach,
peas, radishes, and baby beets. Later in the summer a selection of zucchini,
cauliflower, baby salad greens, lettuce, green beans, carrots, squash and
onions would be likely. Finally, tomatoes, peppers, corn, cucumbers, swiss
chard, kale, potatoes and winter squash could be found in late summer or early
fall selections. A share will generally supply produce for two to four people.
A half share is also available.
